What is Pilates?
Pilates is a full-body system of sequenced exercises performed either on a mat or on custom designed equipment. It is a low impact form of muscle strengthening that is not focused on building muscle bulk as in a weights programme, but, rather, on improving your control over the key postural muscles.

Pilates was developed in the 1940s by German born Joseph Pilates after witnessing the immobility of so many unwell patients in bed. It was here he devised a gentle exercise regime for his patients in bed. Those patients who practiced Joseph's exercises improved much quicker.

Pilates exercises focus on controlling the body ‘core’, while performing various movements of the trunk or limbs. Rather than increasing the resistance of exercises as you might do in a gym, Pilates increases the complexity of movements. The advantage is that you work on muscle control rather than strength, with the exercises working muscle groups in patterns that are functional. The result is a toned body that works more efficiently, and more often than not a reduction in back pain.

Pilates can help with the following conditions

• Low back pain
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Sports injuries
• Arthritis
• Pregnancy
• Osteoporosis
• Joint or muscle stiffness
• Obesity
• Neurological conditions
• Fibromyalgia

TRX Training:

What is TRX training?

TRX is a training system most recently developed
in the US military. It uses a series of suspended
straps that makes your body weight a resistance
to exercise against.

Would you like to:

Get fitter?
Get stronger?
Lose weight?
Tone up?
Get a better core workout?
Improve your balance and flexibility?

If the answer is yes - and, let’s face it, who would
not benefit from one or two of the above?
Then TRX is for you!

How does it make me fitter?
Each class is a 45 minute session that will get
your heart rate pumping as you transition from
exercise to exercise working as hard as you can
manage. Our instructors are Chartered Physiotherapists
who are there to make sure you never
push beyond what your body can cope with.

How does it make me stronger?
Each exercise involves lifting some of your body
weight against gravity. If you are super fit, you
lift all of your weight. If, like most of us, you are
not so fit, you adapt your position and lift what
you can manage.

How will I lose weight?
By combining a cardio workout with a strength
programme you will be burning calories and
building more lean muscle.

How can all of this improve my flexibility?
Each exercise involves challenging your balance
a little and moving progressively further into
the range of movement as you can manage. As
you get stronger, you move a little further. We
also throw in a few deliciously strong stretches
along the way to break up the work out!

Does this really work my core?
Oh yes! Firstly, the TRX is anchored to a single
point in the ceiling, so you need to work your
core to stop you from losing your balance. Secondly,
as you move through each exercise, you
will feel your core bracing to enable you to get
the full power out of each movement. Thirdly,
if you feel really sadistic, we will get you doing
some atomic crunches just to prove the point!

I just want to tone up; I'm not after big muscles!
Don’t worry! The exercises are only as hard as
you make them. We’re not trying to turn you into
a body builder, just give you a good all over workout
and hopefully make you feel a little better in
yourself. If you do want to get big, we can do that
too!

Why choose us?
All of our classes are planned and run by a Chartered
Physiotherapist who will monitor each individual
and progress the exercises according to the
group. Classes are limited to 6 participants, so nobody
will be left out or left behind.

Who will the classes suit?
The short answer is almost anyone; the exercises
are easily modified to suit the fit and the not-so-fit.
TRX training is widely used in rugby, golf, tennis,
MMA and even surfing.
We try to group the classes depending on fitness
levels, though. If you have an injury or illness, please
let us know before you enrol. If you have any longstanding
health issues, or are over 60 years of age,
we recommend you attend your GP for clearance
first.
